FAQ:  PILOT INSTRUCTION

 

The Federal Aviation Administration dictates the instruction needed for the certification as a Balloon Pilot (LTA).

 

      For a Private Certification:  Ten (10) hours of instruction; a solo flight; ascent to 2000 ft. in one flight; attain 70% on a written test given by the FAA; pass a practical exam given by an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner for balloons.

 

      Requirements for certification as a Commercial Pilot is similar except:  thirty-five (35) hours of combined instruction and flight experience are required; an ascent to 3,000, and you must pass a written and practical exam given by an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner for balloons.

      A list of the study materials needed will be proveded as well as suggestions concerning the various approaches for studying for the written tests.

 

CLAYTON THOMAS, the Chief Pilot at the Balloon School, is a FAA designated Pilot Examiner.  He is available to administer the practical test for either private or commercial certification.  This will involve actually flying with him in order to demonstrate ability as an LTA Pilot.

 

Dr Thomas has examined 185 LTA pilots, and approximately 12 of these pilots are Private / Commercial pilots.
